SMT Update - September 13, 2005
In 2004, AECT provided a $1,000 Technology Grant for the innovative use of technology in the classroom. Teachers, media specialists, and technology coordinators were invited to submit proposals for the innovative use of computers and related technologies in their school. The reviewers considered this a very successful project for two reasons- first, because of the high number of responses and secondly the excellent quality of the proposals. The proposals described some very exciting and valid project ideas leading to enhanced learning with measurable outcomes. The Division of Media and Technology would like to, once again, sponsor this project for the year 2005-2006. Criteria for selection of the winning $1,000 grant will be posted to our division website. The winner will be invited to receive the grant award at AECT 2006 in Dallas. The International Student Media Festival has been a wonderful method for children to communicate their thoughts and ideas through various forms of media. Anyone who has worked with children knows they love innovative methods for communication. Reading and writing naturally flow as children are engaged in projects that engage them in the use of images, sound, color, and animation. The Division hopes to provide support for next year's competition. Our division is comprised mainly of classroom technology coordinators, media specialists, and those in higher education who prepare teachers who may enter these professions. We are committed to providing resources and scholarship that contribute to the collaborative efforts of media specialists and classroom teachers. We also know that information literacy is closely linked to digital resources. This means the technology coordinator and media/library professionals must work closely to provide children and young people the preparation needed to, not only function adequately, but also be successful in our online information society. In my mind, information literacy and technology have merged into one entity. We invite Division members to submit to a biannual digital publication with ideas and best practices related to use of school technology. Photographs and "your stories" will be published to the online magazine each fall and spring. Carol Brown Dr. Carol A.
