In one of the biggest changes in education in more than 100 years, the Minister for Education, John Lenders, and the Minister for Skills and Education Services, Jacinta Allan, today announced a new Education Act for Victoria. The Education and Training Reform Act 2006 came into force on 1 July 2007. Mr Lenders said increasing the minimum school leaving age from 15 to 16 was among the changes under the new legislation. Ms Allan also said Victoria was the first State in Australia to provide a guaranteed place in a TAFE or other public provider for young people who have not completed Year 12 or its equivalent. Fact sheets are available about the changes including establishing a new statutory authority, reporting school performance and affirmation of free instruction in government schools.
